Early in my photojournalism career (1979 -2014) I covered professional, college, and high school sports at least once a week. In 1984, I went to my first Olympic Games as the junior member of Knight-Ridder photo pool. During those games I learned the ropes of covering the Olympics and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for my images of the collision between 3000 meters runners, Mary Decker, of the United States, and Zola Budd, of Great Britain/SouthAfrica. I wouldn’t get to another Olympic games until 2000 in Sydney. I was blessed to also cover the 2004 Athens games and the 2012 London games. In those final games I worked solo, as photographer and editor, working at least 16 hours a day for the three-week event. It was, and still remains, the hardest I’ve ever worked at photography, but it also created some of the richest memories of my career. Enjoy these Olympic moments. Addition sports galleries will come later as find time to I dig through my old 1980’s and 1990’s files.
